Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment aimed at restoring healthy testosterone levels in individuals who suffer from low testosterone, a condition known as hypogonadism. The signs to look for in men with low testosterone can include:
• Fatigue • Reduced libido • Erectile dysfunction • Mood swings
• Decreased muscle mass • Increased body fat.
This quick Low-T Quiz will help you assess the severity of your symptoms and how Low Testosterone may be impacting your life.
TRT typically involves administering testosterone through various methods, such as injections, gels, patches, or implants.
The goal of treatment is to alleviate the symptoms associated with low testosterone, which can vary from person to person.
Patients undergoing TRT can expect to experience improved energy levels, increased muscle mass, enhanced libido, improved mood, and better overall well-being. However, it's crucial to obtain a proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plan, as TRT may carry potential risks and side effects that need to be carefully monitored and managed.
-
We begin with a detailed review of the patient's medical history, including any chronic illnesses, medications, and previous treatments.
-
Discuss and record the patient's symptoms related to low testosterone, such as fatigue, reduced libido, mood changes, muscle loss, and erectile dysfunction.
How to get started
Initial Assessment
Blood Testing
-
We obtain a comprehensive blood panel to measure baseline hormone levels, including total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), as well as other indicators.
-
We check a CBC (complete blood count) to assess hematocrit and hemoglobin levels.
-
We perform a metabolic panel to evaluate liver and kidney function, lipid profile, and glucose levels.
-
PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels to assess prostate health.
-
Vitamin D levels as it can impact testosterone production.
-
We prescribe the selected TRT method at an appropriate dosage and either provide clear instructions for self-administration or schedule appointments for in-office administration.
-
We also schedule a follow-up appointment to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and monitor progress and adjust the dosage as needed.
How the treatment works
Initiation of Treatment
Ongoing Monitoring
-
Every 4 weeks we will schedule a blood tests to monitor hormone levels, hematocrit, and other relevant parameters and reassess the patient's symptoms and adjust treatment as necessary.
-
Discuss long-term treatment goals, including potential discontinuation or maintenance therapy and ancillary treatments that may be beneficial.
-
We educate the patient about the benefits and potential risks of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
-
We discuss the various TRT methods, including intramuscular injections, transdermal patches, gels, and implants.
-
We will then tailor the treatment plan based on the patient's preferences, lifestyle, and medical history.
-
We will also set clear goals for TRT, focusing on symptom relief and improvements in quality of life.
